Chapter Twelve

Chelsea

True to his word, Phil had been waiting for me in the lobby after I was done with my wedding duties and walked me to my car. After a long hug and another heart-stopping kiss, I finally got into my car and drove home.

I fell asleep immediately after changing into pajamas and crawling into bed. I had the best dreams, and even though I didn’t want to wake up or get out of bed in the morning, knowing I’d see Phil made it a little easier to leave the warmth and coziness.

Frank had mentioned that Edith was going to make sure there would be a special treat for me in the morning. How could I complain about that? Even the hope of eating one of her famous cinnamon rolls finally got me all the way out the door.

I couldn’t help the grin on my face when I pulled into my usual parking place. Phil, who had been standing at the entrance to the lodge, was now making his way toward me and my car. He was next to me by the time I stepped out of my car and closed the door. I shook my head. “Do you ever stop working?”

“I’m not working right now.”

I tipped my head to the side. “Then why are you out here?”

“Can’t a guy just want to make sure the people important to him are safe?”

My face grew warm, and I pulled my purse closer to me. “I suppose you can.”

“Let’s go, then.”

Phil walked me into the lodge and past the front desk, both of us waving at Damien as we walked through the lobby and toward the ballroom. I was happy Avery was working the front desk later on today instead of me. The insanity of the week had caught up with me, and I needed a break. Taking a deep breath, I pushed open the doors and walked into the ballroom.

Please don’t let Quinn be in here.

I let out a sigh when I walked into a blissfully empty room. The kitchen and catering staff had taken care of all the dishes, flatware, and napkins the night before, and Quinn had already gathered all the centerpieces onto one table before Lukas took her home. Everything else was still very much how I left it the night before.

“Need help with anything?”

My heart fluttered slightly as I glanced over at Phil. “Not at the moment. Honestly, and don’t take this wrong, but I think you’re going to be more of a distraction at this point.”

He nodded and gave me a knowing smile. “No offense taken at all. I’m going to check in with Borce and the guys. You’ll let me know if you need anything, yeah?”

I waved my phone at him. “I promise.”

After one last hug, Phil left, and I took a moment to make a game plan for the morning. While it didn’t take me long to gather all the table linens and put them in the rolling bin to be washed, it did take me a little longer to pack up the centerpieces and put them away.
